As women, we have it tough sometimes. We’re meant to look a certain way, act a certain way, be feminine, and tick all sorts of boxes while managing to keep everything together. And when it comes to a power play, women are usually the victims because we get dominated (physically and culturally) by men. In certain cultural or social structures, being compared to a woman is negative, just by virtue of being female. “You hit like a girl.” “Are you on your period?”
Sure, women have been fighting for their rights since forever — it’s nothing new. But as the tide changes in 2018, there has been calls to change the programming. With this (welcomed) deluge of female power-related movements, the world seems to be listening. We’re not complaining at all. From the Women’s March last year and this year, to the #MeToo movement, and the silent #TimesUp protest at the 2018 Golden Globes, it seems that even the free world (read: America) is pushing for tectonic movement in all areas, and it has reverbrated in all corners of the world. Especially for us women who are privileged enough to own a smart phone and are able to read and digest this type of content.
If you were scrolling through the Women’s March feeds last week and felt empowered, then these Instagram accounts will speak to you. Here are #TeamCLEO’s go-to list for feminism at a tap. We’ve hit follow on these inspiring portals — you should too. We also include reasons why.
feminist instagram account #1: @feministfightclub
A Wall Street Journal bestseller — Feminist Fight Club was published by journalist and New York Times gender editor Jessica Bennett who blended the personal story of her real-life office “fight club” with a studied assessment of the gender gap that continues to plague the American workplace and beyond. The Instagram account is now a testimony to this and posts content relating to the battle against sexism at the workplace and beyond. Find memes, original content and a whole lot of herstory on the fight against patriarchy.
