5 Malaysian ‘Girl Crushes’ You Must Follow On Instagram

While the rest of the world is hung up over Insta-famous influencers and bloggers, there are still some of us who simply love to follow those who choose to express their creativity and passion on the platform. Fashion has given rise to many, but not everything is about the numbers or the glitz and glam. Sometimes we just want to swoon over spontaneous and unpredictable content!

We talked to 5 Malaysian non-influencer Instagrammers — totally worth the follow, btw — on how they found love for fashion.

How would you describe your style?

I’d say that I don’t have a specific sense of style because I’m always up for trying different trends and styles. I love playing with patterns, colours and especially accessories and always make it a point to wear at least one item of an accessory that makes a statement. But on a daily basis, I like to keep it simple yet chic and every other day when I have to dress up, I’d either try for something edgy or girly. Depending on my mood!

What got you into fashion and how did it happen?

What got me into fashion was my insane love for Gossip Girl. I grew up watching Gossip Girl and idolising Blair Waldorf, mainly because of her fashion sense. Back then, I was very into puffy skirts, headbands & peplum tops (which was everything you’d find in Blair’s wardrobe) and I would base all of my clothes to what she would wear on the show. Because of my love for Blair, I then grew to love Audrey Hepburn (who was also one of the inspirations to Blair’s character). I watched all of her movies from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Roman Holiday and studied the way she dressed and portrayed herself on and off camera. I was in love with her classy style and love for extravagant hat pieces. And from then on, I discovered and learnt more and more about other designers, brands and fashion icons and knew that this was a passion that I had.

Do you have any style inspirations?

I love Aimee Song (@songofstyle) and Yoyo Cao (@yoyokulala). Every day I’m on their Instagram page to see their OOTDs and how they would mix and match their outfits. Their sense of style is similar but still a little different than the other. Aimee styles her outfits with lots of prints and patterns while Yoyo focuses more on boldly coloured outfits paired with statement accessories or shoes. A designer that I admire is Han Chong of Self-Portrait. I love the brand itself and all of their lace and asymmetrical trademarks on their clothing pieces but I also love how creative and intelligent Han Chong is — how he creates his well-designed dresses that portray a very feminine yet an edgy look that is flattering for all women.

Where do you usually shop?

I love to shop more when I’m overseas! I have this habit when I’m overseas — I try to shop only local and not at a shop that I could get back home. My favourite place to shop is at Editors Market in Singapore. Their clothes are all so minimalist yet super chic and trendy. I also shop quite a bit on ASOS because it’s so convenient and it does have everything. Whenever I’m looking for something specific, I would usually just search that item up on their search box and a range of what I was looking for would pop up.

How do you pick your outfits every day?

Every night just before I sleep, I’d pick out my outfits for the next day. I love looking at stylish people on Instagram and on Pinterest. So when I have an outfit in mind, I’ll try to search up something similar on these platforms to get some inspiration for my outfits. This helps me all the time and I always get so excited to wear out these outfits that I have planned out the next day!

Why did you choose Instagram as a platform to share your passion?

I think Instagram has grown to be more than just another social media platform. Everyone uses Instagram now for everything — to sell, share, and communicate etc. Over the years of being on Instagram, I realised that I wanted to build my profile better and provide content that could share my passion for fashion and style. Hence, my Instagram page mainly being my outfit pictures. Instagram is a good platform to build your content but it’s all about the matter of using it properly and wisely!

Do you have any tips or tricks on how to use Instagram effectively and creatively?

I would say, in terms of how to use Instagram creatively… just be yourself! Creativity and art come in all sorts of form and we should always embrace it. Share what you love and what you’re passionate for and never be afraid about it! Also, make use of the platform as much as you want. Now with Instagram Stories, it’s also another way of sharing some of the things you love and you can be creative with it, however, you like. For me, I like to make my Instagram Stories as “editorial” as possible just because I enjoy creating these content and also wanting to share it in another fun way.
