Char Kuey Teow
Ask any Penangite and they’ll tell you the Kampung Jawa Char Kuey Teow is a must try! But for us here in KL, you will come pretty close with Penang One’s Char Kuey Teow. With ingredients trucked down from the Pearl of the Orient daily and chefs trained by the masters from Penang, the Char Kuey Teow here comes with the option of duck egg, or regular egg. And though it might look a little too greasy, it exudes that distinctive, lovable flavor and is just rich enough for the palate.

Nasi Lemak
On weekends, the crowd spills onto tables and chairs on the streets of Damansara Uptown and it’s evident that the draw to Village Park is their signature dish – the nasi lemak ayam goreng. Coconut rice, spicy anchovy and onion sambal, half a hard boiled egg, cucumber slices, roasted peanuts and anchovies and a crispy, seasoned chicken thigh are piled on a plate and you’re meant to eat a little of  everything with the spicy sambal for an explosion of flavours. If you’re not into fried chicken or you want something different, their beef or chicken rendang are good options to have.

Banana Leaf Rice
For Kerala fish curry and their unique crab curry, look no further than Devi’s Corner in the heart of Bangsar. Drown your generous portion of rice and vegetables with the satisfying and rich curries and have the side dishes such as crispy fried bitter gourd, seasoned fish, squid and mutton varuval as accompaniments. Upstairs provides comfortable seating conditions in air-conditioning and they open 24-7.

Bak Kut Teh (non-halal)
Ah Ping Bak Kut Teh in SS14 Subang Jaya is nestled along a row of shop houses facing the main road and is usually the busiest on the stretch. Opening only in the early evenings, Subangnites and others in surrounding areas make the drive to enjoy the shop’s offerings – the pot of dark, herbal broth with tender pork bones and meat, bean curd sheets, enoki mushrooms (if you like) and tau foo pok and crunchy, blanched Chinese lettuce with oyster sauce on the side. Upon sipping the soup, you can tell it has been bubbling for hours as you get a heady, rich flavour of herbs and meat. Go early, as they tend to run out of servings by 9pm.

Roti Canai
Despite not serving under shady trees any longer, Raju’s in Jalan Gasing still has some of the best roti around. Dished out on leafy green banana leaves, their roti is touched with a little oil and is warm, fluffy and crispy on the outside, with some chewiness along the edges. Tuck into the accompanying thick lentil curry and our fave – a combination of fish and chicken curry – for extra warmth and bite.

Prawn Mee (non-halal)
Lim Mee Yoke in SS2 now is its on shop, having formerly shared a space in Chow Yang Restaurant. Now, it specialises in prawn noodles and every bowl is a satisfying, delicious one. Order with either meehoon, yellow egg noodles or both and add pork ribs to the dish for more meatiness. Shallots come in a spoon when served and the stock used for the soup is thick and full of briny prawn flavor.
