Party shops are aplenty around town and are easily recognisable by a rainbow of balloons spilling out of the store; but while these places are a convenient one-stop shop with a wide variety, things can be a little pricey especially if you’re throwing a party on a budget. We don’t want to be the party pooper, of course, so we’ve gathered eight places you can unexpectedly find supplies and materials that won’t kill your wallet!
Almost everything in Kaison is Insta-worthy and at very affordable prices. The only downer is that their stock runs out pretty fast, and they may or may not restock them. So once you’ve set your eyes on something for your party, grab it soon!
Look out for: Wooden letters, huge paper lanterns, star and heart-shaped foil balloons, crepe paper flowers, patterned serviettes and mini lanterns with lights.
S&J is another treasure trove waiting to be scoured through. We especially love their adorable themed hairbands, hats and masks that pop up during special seasons such as Halloween and Christmas! They’re perfect as door gifts for guests to get any party looking super festive.
Look out for: Colourful string lights, funky straws, emoji balloons, buntings and marquee letters.
Mr D.I.Y has come a long way from being a typical hardware store. They now stock practically everything and anything you can think of at very reasonable prices. Take your time to browse through their huge variety of party hats and masks, tableware, noisemakers, buntings and more!
Look out for: An assortment of glow sticks, glow bands, glow crowns and glow headbands, party poppers, decorated masks, spiral balloons, mini message boards and mason jars that can be used for drinks or decor.
Ah, the land of everything for RM5.30. It makes everything sound economical, but take a step back before you make your purchase and ask if what you’re buying is actually worth that price, or if you can get it at a lower rate somewhere else. Go for items that come in packs for extra value.
Look out for: Brown paper bags for party favours, pretty boxes for gifts, rolls of gold / silver wrapping paper, a variety of tablecloths and props such as felt moustaches and funny eyeglasses.
“The home furnishing giant?” you ask. Yep, in between their oh-so-cosy beds and ever useful storage cabinets are a selection of colourful paper plates, cups, napkins, gift bags, ribbons, tape, tags and more. You don’t have to limit yourself to party supplies, though. Get creative with candles, photo frames and potted plants as well!
Look out for: 13 and 18-piece party sets, honeycomb hanging decorations, battery-powered fairy lights, pretty candle holders and funky art cards.
Typo is known for home decor and quirky gifts, but there are some awesome party stuff among them! Use your creativity to turn items such as their photo garland kit, party crate and novelty pegs into amazing (and reusable) decor for any party!
Look out for: A variety of party prop kits, cool photo backdrops and wooden symbols!

With their clean, wide aisles of home items and rolls upon rolls of cloth, Spotlight is a seemingly unusual place for party supplies, but tucked way inside is a section dedicated to it. They have everything from paper plates and piñatas to candles and striped straws along with a counter just for balloon services.
Look out for: Funky candles and helium tanks (especially when they’re on sale!), which can fill a ceiling full of balloons at a lower cost than having them pumped individually at a shop.
It can be a little overwhelming to step into a Living Cabin outlet, because each one is just stuffed to the brim with items, from soft toys to musical boxes and quirky gifts to stationery. But bring out the bargain hunter in you and you’ll dig up some great finds!
Look out for: Pre-strung crepe paper flowers, mini glass bottles and paper lanterns.
