2016 was undeniably the year of the choker.
Everyone from Taylor Swift to our next door neighbour were sporting them in all colours, lengths and embellishments. But wait, don’t abolish your chokers just yet, because it looks like the trend is spilling over to 2017! Just check out how these stars strutted them at the recent Golden Globes and Grammys. Plus, how some of our fave models-of the-moment styled theirs on the streets!
At the Golden Globes
This adorable actress always has the best lines up her sleeve. The A-lister light-heartedly told Ryan Seacrest “Well, it’s got stars on it,” when asked about her Valentino gown. Emma definitely hit all the right notes in the stunning backless piece and 1909 Tiffany & Co. choker necklace that oozed femininity.
Michelle had on a romantic off-shoulder lace Louis Vuitton gown but what REALLY got people talking was her choice of neck adornment. The unique ribbon choker elevated the trend to new fashion heights and we can already see it on Hollywood stars, fashion bloggers and us mere mortals throughout 2017!
Zazie took a classic look and turned it into something truly memorable. Her black Delphine Manivet dress played with fabric blocking while her jewellery, by Selim Mouzannar, stood out in their simplicity. The super skinny choker is only made visible with the sparkly jewel in front, and is layered with a similar-style necklace. Effortless yet so pretty!
At the Grammys
JLo has always defined red carpet fashion and it was no different this year in her elaborate Ralph & Russo gown! The plunging neckline was more subdue than her legendary 2000 Versace dress, but this lavender stunner came with a built-in fabric choker of sorts. The massive tulle flower that grabbed headlines would make Carrie Bradshaw proud.
The departure of this 19-year-old beauty from Fifth Harmony was mourned but she looked better than ever on the red carpet. Her silver Judith Leiber gown was sprinkled with pretty floral embellishments and topped up with a sparkly chain-mail choker that gave the whole look an edge.
Queen Bey is no less a queen even when pregnant with twins. She blew everyone away with her gold performance outfit custom made by designer Peter Dundas. Intricate sequin and beading details lined the sheer gown, but what really stood out were her accessories – including a massive tiara and layered gold chokers that gave her a Cleopatra vibe.
On the streets
This Kardashian sister loves her chokers and boy, does she know how to pull them off (well, it could be her long, slender neck that does the trick)! Here, she sports one of her favourites – a delicate leather cord that wraps around her neck three times and ties in a bow or knot. It’s a versatile piece that can be styled in a variety of ways; think moving the bow to the side or front, or wrapping it round once as a choker and once as a dangly necklace!
The trendsetter proves that chokers can be worked into any kind of outfit. She’s totally dressed down in this monochrome athleisure ensemble and long bomber jacket, but her wraparound choker subtly ups the style with a dash of chic.
Georgia May Jagger
Georgia totes rocked this ensemble that pulls eyes to the print blazer and chunky zip top. The thick black choker that wraps high around her neck gives the look a grunge vibe, but be wary that you don’t look “leashed” when you pull off one like this. To tone down the look, try layering it with a thin gold choker or necklaces with bling!
