Albanian-British songstress, Dua Lipa caught our attention when her single ‘New Rules’ ruled radio stations nationwide. Our November 2017 Covergirl was recently under the spotlight, and not for a good reason, after she posted an adorable picture of her and her father on Instagram for his birthday back in March.
The original caption read “Happy Birthday Babi ❤❤❤ Love you, miss you, wish I was home to give you a big hug and a kiss! Xxx”
Unfortunately Malaysian netizens took it to heart and attacked her for using the word “Babi”. While it may be an offensive and degrading word to the Muslims as it translates to the word “pig”, it however means “Father” in Albanian.
Her dedicated Instagram post was then flooded with mean and spiteful comments claiming that she was being disrespectful which then prompted her to make the changes to her caption. Dua Lipa had announced back in February that she would be dropping by Malaysia for her Self-Titled Tour in KL Live on the 3rd of May 2018. Despite this rather ridiculous incident, there have been no news of a tour cancellation for Malaysia.
Dua Lipa recently spoke to L’Officiel and said
“It was actually quite mean on their behalf, because obviously I’m not talking in Malay. I speak another language as well, and the language that I speak with my parents is my heritage. I would like that to be respected.”
Way to go guys.
However, being new to the industry after becoming an overnight sensation – Dua Lipa knows that there is more to come and that she will not only receive love from her fans but hate from those who want to tear her down.
In the same interview, she said “Everybody’s so lovely and supportive, but you’re also very open to judgment. That’s one of the sacrifices that you put up with doing this as a job. You get lots of people saying not so nice things. I don’t know if it was just this whole shift in the song doing well — all of a sudden you have a lot more eyeballs on you and then people just don’t like you for the sake of not liking you.”
