We’ve all had that too-broke-to-date days, but it’s always extra awesome to be imaginative and plan dates that won’t flatten your wallet (at all!). So get out of your comfort zone of dinner-and-movie night with these five free but intimate activities for your next date!
Walk on glass 10 storeys high
One City Mall’s Sky Park is the first commercial mall in Malaysia to feature a unique sky glass bridge on the top floor, which has glass panels that you can walk, sit or dance on (if you dare!) and look down from 10-storeys high. Tip: Don’t wear skirts or dresses on this date! Grab on to your partner as you cross the glass bridge together (this builds trust!) and snap a ton of photos, including of your feet of course. The view from the Sky Park itself is gorgeous; it overlooks the whole city on the big open deck with a nice breeze. Visit it at sunset or night time for an extra pretty view of twinkling lights down below. There are also a variety of restaurants and bars there for you to dine in the sky.
Be a tourist in your own city
On the third Saturday of every month, Rakan KL organises volunteer-led walks to some of Kuala Lumpur’s most historical and iconic sites. They aim to educate and advocate the preservation of KL’s heritage by giving you a glimpse into the past, coupled with stories about the significance of each place you’ll visit. Routes are not always the same; in fact, they have special routes on celebratory days such as Merdeka and Deepavali. Walks last about 2.5 hours, which gives you and your partner some exercise as well as lots to discover and discuss! Check out their Facebook page to find out when the next walk is.
Chill at a water jet plaza
Just outside the bustling Setia City Mall is over 10.5 acres of beautifully landscaped greenery. The Oval Lawn is a huge open space that’s perfect for an evening out with your partner. Lay a mat down on the grass and have a heart-to-heart talk, blow huge bubbles and watch them float around you, or fly a kite! There are also nice bridges and lanes for you to take a leisurely stroll on while getting your romance on at the water jet plaza, and a mesmerizing water fountain lights up with colours at night.
Ride on car-free roads around the city
KL Car-Free Morning happens on the first and third Sunday of every month, when major streets in the Golden Triangle will be closed to vehicles. Take your partner there from 7am to 9am for a healthy date of cycling, rollerblading, jogging or even hoverboarding on the roads of KL. Spice your time together up a little with a horse carriage ride, where you can pretend to be any prince or princess in the world, real or animated.
Psst: Publika Mall also blocks off the internal roads of their compound for similar Wheelie Sundays from 7am to 10am, where you can get some teamwork going on a tandem bike!
Take a stroll down fairytale land
i-City is known as the City of Digital Lights, and this technology park in the outskirts of Shah Alam comes alive at night with over 1 million dazzling LED lights. Talk a dreamy walk with your partner through a enthralling forest filled with illuminated man-made trees, flowers, animals and other sculptures. It’s like stepping into a fairytale! If you have a little dough to spend, visit the Snow Walk for some icy fun or take an intimate ride on the huge ferris wheel!
Take a short drive out of town to Malacca, where you can visit a desert right smack here in Malaysia! Padang Pasir Klebang is a stretch of land that has been reclaimed by developers, and piles of sand have been sitting there for years, giving is a super unique ‘desert’ look. Go snap-happy with your partner here for some really awesome couple photos!
