Among many reasons why we love Instagram Story more than anything else (including you, Facebook story) is because of the extra add-ons that amplifies a point. The day Instagram integrated with GIPHY, there was no turning back to the ol’ static emoji stickers.
Instagram and Snapchat have both removed the GIF feature on their respective platforms when a user discovered an offensive GIF with a racial slur. According to the Twitter user @LyaunaAugmon, when the word “crime” is typed into the search bar, an inappropriate GIF would appear.
As a reaction to the outrage, the GIF function was pulled out completely and a spokesperson from GIPHY responded to Teen Vogue with a statement:
“A user discovered an offensive GIF sticker in our library, and we immediately removed it per our content guidelines.
After investigation of the incident, this sticker was available due to a bug in our content moderation filters specifically affecting GIF stickers. We have fixed the bug and have re-moderated all of the GIF stickers in our library.
The GIPHY staff is also further reviewing every GIF sticker by hand and should be finished shortly.
We take full responsibility for these recent events and sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended.”
It’s sad that the feature has been removed altogether, when all they could’ve done was remove the specific sticker and move on. So far, there is no news in relation to whether it will be back but we’ll be hoping it returns with a wider selection of funny and most importantly non-offensive animated stickers.
