How To Kick Social Anxiety Out Of The Picture In 2017

I never knew what I’ve been struggling with had a name for it, neither did I know it would be a big deal. Where I’m from, we don’t talk about it enough. The only thing I grew up hearing from people around me about any sort of mental health related issue always drops in a conversation with a joke reference to Tanjung Rambutan where Ulu Kinta Mental Hospital is located – “Are you OK? Do you want me to drop you off at Tanjung Rambutan?” It has become a part of our insensitive humour.

So what exactly is social anxiety?

It’s the extreme fear of being judged by others in social situations. I would describe it as having a voice at the back of your head that keeps on spreading negativity. Social anxiety can disrupt your everyday decisions as well as affect relationships with others. Based on ADAA, 36 percent of people with social anxiety disorder report symptoms for 10 or more years before seeking help. Social anxiety can be divided into two types; a specific subgroup where fear is confined to speaking in front of groups only and the more common generalized subgroup, where the person is anxious, nervous, and uncomfortable in almost all social situations.

Perhaps it’s a taboo in most households to talk about our mental health condition, but I feel as if with all the help of technology to ease communication, we should start the conversation going in order to keep the topic afloat.

How to conquer social anxiety like a boss.

It’s about trial and error, going on with what works for you. From my personal experience, I started with doing yoga out of a whim. Post-yoga class, I felt a hundred times calmer and I could finally hear my own thoughts rather than it being clouded all the time. What I got out of it is to look out for activities that enables you to reconnect with yourself mentally.
