It’s been a good week for us all at #TeamCLEO because Lawyers For Liberty recently announced that CLEO Hot Shots 2017, Melissa Sasidaran, is now the director of the organisation.
The human rights activist, 33, was the legal and campaign coordinator of LFL prior to her latest appointment. Melissa was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2010 and completed her Masters of Law (LLM) in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice at SOAS University of London in 2018.
To commemorate this exciting news, #TeamCLEO reached out the Hot Shot alumni for a quick chat about the promotion. Swipe through to check out what she has to say about the appointment!
how DO you feel about the appointment?
This is a great honour of course, as Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) for almost a decade has been the leading human rights lawyers organisation in the country. We have taken on cases under extremely challenging circumstances, including arrests and charges under the Sedition Act, Peaceful Assembly Act, Security Offences (Special Measures) Act and other oppressive laws. We also filed numerous strategic litigation cases and took on hard issues such as death in custody, death penalty, and fatal police shooting cases. I am following in the great examples of human rights advocates such as Latheefa Koya, N. Surendran and Eric Paulsen, and so I hope to continue the important work they have done for human rights in the country.
