It's been a good week for us all at #TeamCLEO because Lawyers For Liberty recently announced that CLEO Hot Shots 2017, Melissa Sasidaran, is now the director of the organisation.
The human rights activist, 33, was the legal and campaign coordinator of LFL prior to her latest appointment. Melissa was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2010 and completed her Masters of Law (LLM) in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice at SOAS University of London in 2018.
To commemorate this exciting news, #TeamCLEO reached out the Hot Shot alumni for a quick chat about the promotion. Swipe through to check out what she has to say about the appointment!
What’s the most important skill you bring to the job?
I have been in legal practice since my call to the Malaysian Bar in 2010. My involvement in human rights activism increased since the 13th General Elections in 2013 and I became involved with the work of LFL, particularly given the spate of arrests and detentions over Bersih and other rallies. I have dealt with authorities in tough circumstances due to the oppressive political climate at that time, which continued until the recent change of government. My predecessors have always taught me to stand up for what is right, to work and strive hard as lawyers defending human rights and the Constitution for all Malaysians.
