Fashion has seen its fair share of the 90s ever since the Hadid/Jenner clan made crop tops, mom jeans and chokers actual closet staples. But if for the past few seasons beauty have been relishing in childhood nostalgias through glitter eyeshadows, lip oils, collabs with 90s icons such as Lisa Frank and My Little Pony as well as unicorn everything, the current NYFW F/W18 has cemented one thing for certain: the return of 90s hair accessories is upon us. Last year the scrunchie slowly made its way back onto the scene when the cool girls at Mansur Gavriel rocked it on the brand’s AW17 runway. Always an early adopter, model Bella Hadid was spotted sporting one after a workout and naturally, the soft fabric hair ties made their way back onto the retail floors of high street and high end boutiques (a $180 Balenciaga version, anyone?)
Most recently at NYFW F/W18, Alexander Wang’s gang of IT girls walked his show with slicked back updo neatly held together with a silver claw clip. Lead hairstylist Guido Palau was taken by idea that something that was once considered passé, is now cool again.
Also contributing to the 90s hair accessories trend is Prabal Gurung by way of stretchy, spiky headbands around a neat post-yoga bun done by hairstylist Anthony Turner. The wraparound headband resembled a spiky, plastic ring that efficiently stayed put and kept hair pushed back.
So what exactly is the appeal of these accessories and why now? Well for starts, practicality plays a big part. Coachella-ready flower crowns and minimalist gold barrettes may be pretty to look at, but how many times can you really whip out a flower crown before it starts feeling old (also, does it actually keep hair off your face?)? Chic, slim barrettes are all well and good, but if you’re blessed with thick hair, you might just break them. Meanwhile, scrunchies, claw clips and stretchy plastic headbands are super useful and actually work to keep hair out of your face whether you’re heading to a workout or just going about your day. They’re also affordable, available almost everywhere and when paired with a fresh face and lipstick, looks pretty great.
We can’t wait to see what the rest of fashion week has in store. Maybe the spring butterfly clip will make an appearance!
