Ditch a workout when you’re feeling sick
Got a cold and are feeling a bit rundown? If so, Cunico urges you to skip the gym and chillax. “By working out when you’re ill, you spread germs and are likely to get worse,” he says.
Forget to think about what you wear — dress appropriately!
OK, so there is such a thing as too much skin. Make sure you cover up with appropriate clothing because while you might look and feel good, showing off your body can make others uncomfortable.
Rehydrate so you don’t pass out
“Never underestimate the importance of hydrating before and after a workout,” Cunico tells us. If you’re planning on doing a sweat session at night, drink plenty of water through the day to prepare your body. Then, post-workout, replenish the fluids you’ve lost. Just remember that drinking two litres of water a day is ideal.
Preach your fully sick fitness techniques to others
Fact: you’re fit. But unless you’re a PT, keep the gym tips to yourself. “While it can be encouraging, misguided advice can be harmful to one’s health and safety,” Cunico warns.
Always take time to warm up and cool down
“Warming up and cooling down is pivotal for injury prevention and muscle development,” says Cunico. This means the five minutes you spend on a warm up and cool down could save your body a lot of pain later.
Leave equipment lying around
Unfortunately, your mum isn’t around to clean up after you. So, once you’re done using those heavy medicine balls and dumbbells, ensure you put them away. Because, as Cunico points out, “Not only is it inconsiderate to other gym members who want to use the equipment or floor space, it’s a safety hazard.”
Focus on your own workout, and not others’
Nothing makes people more self-conscious than being stared at while working out. So always focus on what you’re doing and respect the privacy of your fellow gym members.
Gasbag through your entire workout sesh
Attention, loud-talkers! Cunico says that there’s nothing more annoying than someone who’s talking loudly on the phone while working out. Take note!
Share, because sharing is always caring, folks
Ellipticals always in use? Don’t fret, you can have a turn, too. “Most people understand the need to share equipment,” says Cunico. Ask if you can use the equipment during someone’s recovery period, and most of the time, they’ll let you.
Walk away without cleaning any gym equipment you use
“No one likes to put their yoga mat in a big puddle of sweat, or use a cross-trainer that’s dripping from the last person’s full-on cardio session,” Cunico reminds us. His top tip? To leave the equipment as you found it: squeaky clean and sweat free. Always wipe down the equipment you use it.
