Can you believe that it’s been two years since Fenty Beauty first came out with their sold out Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation that comes in a whopping 50 shades? Made for all skin tones, this foundation was a go-to for those who are looking to keep their make-up on all-day. Ever since, Founder Rihanna has come up with other groundbreaking products including the the recently launched Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation and Brow MVP that will take your make-up from 0 to 100.

We got the chance to speak to Priscilla Ono, Fenty Beauty Global Make-up Artist on Riri’s fav go-to foundation and her brow routine. Priscilla’s passion for beauty began in the ’90s, from watching music videos on MTV. She has since translated her obsession for artistic expression into a 13-year career as a celebrity make-up artist and instructor, leading sold-out master classes and creating looks that have graced international magazine covers, campaigns and red carpets.

Who would be best suited for the Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation and why?
Priscilla Ono (PO): The Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation is great for everyone! Of course if you have dry skin, this formula is a game changer! It’s hydrating and refreshing, but also longwearing which is not easy to find in a hydrating formula. The formula is even great for people with oily skin, because as we start moving into cooler months, sometimes you actually end up over-drying your skin and producing more oil as a result. The Hydrating Foundation is my go-to for a really fresh, natural finish.

Which out of the two foundations would you prefer using on Rihanna? The Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation or the Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation?
PO: I actually like to use both the Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation and the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation on Rihanna. I use the Hydrating Foundation on the perimeter of her face and the Soft Matte Foundation on the T-Zone which gets oilier.

Would you recommend using both primers, hydrating and mattifying on targeted areas? Specifically for people with combination skin.
PO: If you have combination skin, you can definitely use multiple primers to target specific areas. I like to use the Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer in the T-Zone and centre of the face. The Pro Filt’r Hydrating primer is extra nourishing and hydrating, so I would use it on drier areas of the face like the cheeks, or in other targeted areas where you may have dry patches.

What is the biggest no-no when it comes to using foundation?
PO: When you have dry or flaky skin, you have to make sure to properly prep by exfoliating and moisturising. Then apply a nourishing primer, like the Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer, which creates a soft base for easier make-up application. Finally, apply the foundation with a damp sponge to mimic the texture of the skin and create a more natural finish. Applying foundation without prepping first can really emphasise texture.

How do we prevent our faces from looking like an oil-slick at the end of the day?
PO: The key to preventing oily skin is to apply a complexion base that is longwear, set it with a powder and then do touch ups throughout the day to either blot shine or remove excess oil. So, first I start with a primer – Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer is amazing if you are worried about shine and the original Instant Retouch Primer also diffuses your skin but is less matte. Next, I apply the Pro Filt’r Foundation – the original Soft Matte will mattify oily skin or you can apply it just in the centre of your face, and apply the new Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation on the perimeter, to get a more natural vs soft matte overall look. Next, set your base with Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder or Invisimatte Blotting Powder. To remove excess oil from the skin, blot with Invisimatte Blotting Paper and to diffuse shine, use Invisimatte Blotting Powder which is translucent so it never builds or becomes cakey.

We have to say, the brow pencil is one-of-a-kind! How does the brush help ease the eyebrow-drawing process?
PO: I love the paddle brush! Its wide paddle makes it easier to groom the brow and then blend the pencil color effortlessly after application. The brush is also super lux, offers more precision and lasts longer than your standard spoolie!

What makes this eyebrow pencil perfect for make-up beginners?
PO: Pencil is generally my go-to for brows because it’s easy to apply and looks really natural. Fenty Beauty Brow MVP pencil is so user friendly – the formula has great colour pay-off with longevity. It’s not dry, so it doesn’t tug at your skin and the paddle brush makes it really easy to blend any harsh lines.

What would you say Rihanna’s regular brow routine is?
PO: Rihanna likes a very precise brow. She actually does her own brows most of the time, unless it’s an editorial or playing a character. She likes a thin and precise brow and usually just combs and fills them in.

What are people doing wrong when applying foundation/makeup on textured skin?
PO: Skin prep is super important, especially for textured skin. You want to make sure the skin is prepped really well by properly cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising prior to foundation application. Once your skincare is well applied, apply a primer that’s suitable for your skin type.

What is the one rule you stand by when doing your eyebrows or a client’s?
PO: Starting your brow by filling your arch first to set the tone and everything else kind of falls into place from there.

Tips to keep in mind when getting your face on.

The key to the perfect base?
PO: The key to perfect base is skin prep!

How do we get the perfect arch for the brows?
PO: I always start with the arch because getting this part right is the most important and everything else falls into place from there. To get the perfect arch, make short strokes with your eyebrow pencil to mimic your natural hairs.

A must-have product in your kit for any occasion?
PO: Invisimatte Blotting Powder is the must-have product for any make-up kit and every purse! I love how I can apply it to set makeup and multiple times throughout the day to diffuse oil.
