CLEO Hot Shots 2016: Meet Alina Amir
Alina Amir, 28, Co-Founder of Arus Academy
“I want my work to make a meaningful difference, and I realised that success isn’t synonymous to corporate clothing, briefcases and fancy corner offices,” quips Alina Amir. Her after-school programme focuses on STEM and interdisciplinary innovation, and the students use their sciences, maths, arts, languages and 21st century skills to solve real-world problems.
How did you get into this industry?
I started off my career post graduation as a management consultant. About a year and a half later, I realized that my heart was not it. I decided that if I was going to work hard all my life, spend long hours, days, months and years working, I want to do work that I truly believe in and could make meaningful difference for my country.
When it’s all over, how do you want to be remembered?
I’d like to be remembered as the person who never lost her passion in her work.
Share with us your favourite inspirational quote.
“The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind” – Khalil Gibran.
If you weren’t in this career path, what else could you see yourself doing?
If I wasn’t working with kids, I think I would want to work with the environment. I love the outdoors and nature.
What’s the one thing you wish to achieve by the end of 2016?
I wish to see Arus continue to reach out to more children of Malaysia and inspire more of them to fall in love with learning. We have really big plans for the rest of the year, with more programs that we want to offer the students and we really want to strengthen our outreach programs.
