CLEO Hot Shots 2016: Meet Chin Xin-Ci
Chin Xin-Ci, 29, Entrepreneur
How can our phones improve women’s security in public places? This question plagued Xin-Ci after her own narrow escape from a kidnapping attempt. Working alongside her co-founder James, the duo created Watch Over Me, a super practical app that turns your phone into an emergency alert system with just a few taps of the screen.
What is your proudest achievement since you started your startup?
My team. We are a small team of 9 where 50% is female, hailing from Malaysia, Indonesia, Ukraine and the United States of America. I love how committed they are to our vision, and the care they have for the company.
What are the biggest lessons learnt from creating your own app?
While the startup industry focuses on “being the first in the market”, I on the other hand think that there’s a benefit to just taking a step back and putting your effort into creating the best possible product.
What’s the most significant milestone the app has reached since its launch?
Watch Over Me has over 250,000 users worldwide.
What are you currently working on?
2016 is the year for me to work on my body and get my fitness level back on track. I’ve recently partnered up with two of my friends to work on a fitness product that encourages women to stay healthy without having to sacrifice the joy of life.
