Checkered jacket, Kittie Yiyi; faux leather trousers, A By Jane; earrings, Bremen Wong; boots, Janushaa’s own.
At a young age of 19 years old, Janushaa A/P Bala Krishnan Muthiah has made history by being the first female Malaysian to be a member of a prestigious United States service academy. Having gone through many layers of interview before being shortlisted, Janushaa remained determined to chase her dreams on becoming the first Malaysian female in the Navy to fly a helicopter.
Tell us a little bit about what you do.
I was a former student of the National Defense University of Malaysia and the first
candidate from Malaysia to join the United States Naval Academy.
How does one get into a programme like yours?
There are many layers of interview before being shortlisted, and one of them is the
Candidate Fitness Assessment. During this stage of the interview, each candidate will have to undergo six physical and motor fitness events that measure muscular strength and endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance, power, balance and agility. The selection of candidates is not just based on physical capabilities, but academic achievements as well.
Who is the main driver in your life?
My inspiration is Major Patricia Yapp Syau Yin, from the Royal Malaysian Airforce. She was
Asia’s first female MiG-29 fighter pilot and I’d like to follow her footsteps to be the first
Malaysian female in the Navy to fly a helicopter.
