Lilly Singh Talks About Her First Ever Youtube Video And Why You Should Be Reading ‘How To Be A Bawse’!

A youtube sensation that doesn’t need an introduction with her entourage of 11Million subscribers. As part of her book tour for ‘How To Be A Bawse’, Lilly Singh a.k.a. IISuperwomanII is coming down to Kuala Lumpur in exactly 2 weeks time. She will be doing a meet & greet along with a book signing session at the Plenary Hall, KL Convention Centre on May 23rd.

We’ve had an amazing opportunity to chat with the funny wise-woman behind the Youtube videos we’ve been watching since 2010 and she talks about why you should be reading the #BawseBook.

Do you remember filming your first ever video to be uploaded on Youtube?

I made my first YouTube video in 2010, so close to 7 years ago. I wish you could have seen the amount of time I spent getting ready for it – doing my hair, my make up, picking out the perfect outfit. I stood in front of the camera and read off a piece of paper and it was the worst, most awkward, cringe worthy interview. It was horrifying to make but when I put it up, people watched it. I distinctly remember my view count being 70 for that video. But, I thought 70 people was a lot of people for a video that I randomly put out and from someone none of those viewers knew.

In another life where you didn’t commit yourself to Youtube and as a comedian, where do you think you’d be today?

Probably using my psychology degree in some form. Maybe a counsellor of some sort. I definitely wouldn’t be as happy as I am now though. I love entertaining people.

Would you encourage your young fans to start their own channel? What’s your one piece of advice for young Youtubers in a country like Malaysia?

My advice for young creators doesn’t really change depending on which country they’re from. I think regardless of where you’re raised and based, it’s important to make content for the right reason and in my opinion, that reason should be because you have something to say. It’s tempting to start making YouTube videos to chase money and fame but it’s still important to have a point of view and be passionate about it.

Was it ever in the radius of your vision to be an author of a book?

I have been so grateful for the good, bad and truly unbelievable experiences I’ve had over the past years, and I felt a book was the perfect format to share those lessons with others. I’ve learned so much from smart people who I admire along the way and wanted to share those stories with my audience. I hope it will inspire others to see beyond the mentality of “dreaming for their dreams.”

Who would you encourage to read How To Be A Bawse and why?

I would encourage anyone who is trying to have a new perspective about their life to read the book. I wrote HOW TO BE A BAWSE with the hope that it will make your work ethic sweat, your mind expand, your fears dissolve and your obstacles crumble in order to help you conquer your life like a Bawse.

We’re almost accustomed to see you wearing a snapback, other than that — what would you say are your top 3 accessories?

My #GirlLove rafiki bracelet, Smashbox “Bawse” lipstick, and my camera (does that count as an accessory?!)

A lot of your fans probably binge watch your videos before they go to bed (we know we do), who’s your favourite Youtuber to binge watch to currently?

This is difficult because I love so many online creators, but Lindsey Stirling is definitely one of my favorites. I think all of her videos are fascinating and mesmerizing.

Ryan Higa is another creator who I admire. He has been posting YouTube videos for many years and his channel keeps getting better and better over time.
