Since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out early this year, everyone has been hyper aware of the need to tote around a bottle of hand sanitiser or anything with anti-bacterial properties.

But did you know, a Japanese study in 2019 revealed that while citizens may be diligent when it came to carrying a bottle of sanitiser with them, they might not necessarily know the right amount to use or even the best way to use their hand sanitisers so that their hands actually stayed germ-free?

In the study, Japanese researchers found that hand sanitiser would have to be rubbed for at least four minutes in order to kill the influenza A (H1N1) virus so that it becomes non-infectious.

However, as we probably know, most people just rub their hands for just a few seconds and call it a day.

The Hand Sanitiser Has To Contain At Least 60% Alcohol

Forget your fruit- or floral-smelling hand sanitisers with an alcohol percentage of less than 60%—they’re a waste of time and they’re absolutely not effective.

For hand sanitisers to work, it actually requires a significant amount of alcohol to attack and destroy the envelope protein that surrounds a virus. The ‘crown’ of proteins found on the coronavirus is actually a small integral membrane that’s responsible for its multiplication and life cycle.

If you’re worried about your hands drying out and getting all chapped from the consistent hand-washing and sanitising, moisturise with hand cream in between.
