A Day In The Life #1: Sylvia Yin

#teamCLEO is proud to introduce a new digital series, ‘A Day In The Life’ to CLEO’s revamped platform. A series that is single-handedly documented by the Malaysian personalities themselves, we want to celebrate everybody from all walks of life. From leading ladies and men across various industries to the millennial movers of our time – CLEO acts as a window into their lives.

We bring our first edition of the #ADayInTheLife series to your screens with Sylvia Yin, Co-founder and Chief Operator of personalised shopping platform, Shoppr.

What does your job entail?

As the Chief Operator, I oversee the day-to-day operations of the company, from managing development roadmap, interviewing users to hiring across departments.

What brought you to do what you’re doing?

While I have always loved fashion, I never imagined myself to run a fashion technology company. I fell head over heels in love with online shopping when I was studying abroad. When I returned home, I was struck by how difficult it was to find an online store that caters to my lifestyle and preferences. Shoppr was a respond to that frustration. By personalising product and brand recommendations from 3000+ local and international brands, Shoppr helps users find what she wants quicker and easier.

Describe a typical day at work.

Plenty of meetings. The day always starts off with a quick meeting to catch up with the development team. After that, I have coffee chats with users and interviews with potential hires for the company. When I’m not in meetings, I’m thinking about what I can do to make the user experience better on Shoppr.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I envision myself running Shoppr’s operation across multiple countries in the region. It is my hope that Shoppr becomes every South East Asian girl’s fashion best friend, empowering them to express their personality courageously through easy access to items that speak their style.

8:00AM – Daily morning yoga and meditation done! Nothing beats some quiet me time in the morning to mentally prepare for the hectic day ahead. ??

8:45AM – Made granola last night so a green smoothie bowl for breakfast it is! I always make my own granola so I can control how sweet it is. That’s my pup, Cookie, in the background. ?

12:30PM – Nutrition is the easiest to go out the window when you’re busy! Take care of yourself so you can take care of your goals and dreams! For packed days like today, I make sure I order in wholesome meals like this. ?

3:00PM – Hiring is a tough challenge I love tackling! How do you effectively suss out a candidate’s attitude and aptitude? Every person that a company hires will greatly impact it’s culture so take your time hiring. Don’t rush!

7:00PM – Last meeting of the day is a user interview! This is my favorite part of building Shoppr, being able to meet the people who love and find value in what we are doing. Nothing beats hearing users feedback in person. If I have a tip to share with aspiring entrepreneurs, it would be to never stop talking to your users. ❤

8:45PM – Finally home! Grabbed Nandos after the user interview as I know I’ll be too famished to cook. Cookie here thinks the food is for her ?

Grateful that today has been a fruitful day! While it was hectic, It was also very energizing. Over the years I’ve learnt that gratitude is such an important attitude to have because it’ll remind you to celebrate the small wins along your way. I look forward to whatever tomorrow may bring! – Sylvia
