The Peachskins

Keep up with The Peachskins on Instagram.

Rafique Ramleh, Sadman Yeasir, Arnold Tham and Shahid Rogers make up The Peachskins. When asked to describe the band in one word, Rafique Ramleh – the band’s frontman – could only muster up a “Cute?”.

He’s not wrong though, The Peachskins do emulate that vibe; from their name, aesthetic and their indie synth-pop sound. Rafique even added that their sound is something you’d get if Daft Punk had a digital theme park that was only accessible from Tumblr.

Who are The Peachskins?

We used to be an extremely genre-confused band but now I can safely say that we’re a synth-pop indie rock band from KL.

How did the band come about and what’s the story behind the name?

Believe it or not, we were supposed to be an emo rock band. Someone once told me that I was like a peach because I bruise easily. She meant it in a way that I would get hurt often. And I thought … damn, that’s a good name for a band. So I came up with the name of the band way before I even found the members for it.

Then I met our drummer Sadman first about 3 years ago on campus, and Arnold a little later in one of my classes. We played together for 2 years until I asked Shahid to join us.

What kickstarted the journey into music?

The moment I saw Marty McFly play guitar in Back to the Future, I knew I just had to play the guitar. And I was lucky enough to fall in love with bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. But what really changed my life was Daft Punk’s Discovery album. I reference it in my music like crazy if you pay close attention to the details.

How would you describe your music style?

If Daft Punk had a digital theme park that was only accessible from Tumblr. Yeah that’s it.

Where do you get your inspiration for your music?

Romance. I’ve never been so in love and it really shows in my lyrics.

Are there any artists you look up to that inspire your music/style?

Oh definitely, lately I’ve been obsessed with Portugal. The Man’s style and I know I’m a little late to the party but I’m currently I’ve been listening to a lot of LANY. Both of their frontmen dress pretty damn cool too.

What is the song writing process like? Melody or lyrics first?

Hmmmm, good question. I guess I’m always thinking of a tune first that’s associated with a mood. So I get the melody in my head while knowing what I’m gonna write about and then the lyrics start coming in. So, melody first.

Do you think people can relate to your music? If yes, in what way?

Someone tweeted me saying that listening to The Peachskins makes her feel like she’s in an imaginary relationship. I loved that description.

Do you have a song that means a lot to you?

It used to be “Delorean Daydream”. But we have a song that we’re releasing later this month called “Glow”. This one’s definitely the special one.

Romance is their biggest inspo

What are your views on the Malaysian music industry?

Thriving. It’s really nice to see that there’s always new music being released and there’s always someone else playing every weekend.

Any changes you’d like to see in the industry?

Everyone wants to be a rapper or a DJ. The hip hop scene is doing great. But there are some really great proper rock bands out there like Spooky Wet Dreams or The Fridays that I’d love for people to get into. Also, I wish our artists released more albums or EPs rather than singles all the time. Maybe I’m a little old school.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

We had an inactive year last year so we could focus in school for a while, so I guess right now it’s pretty challenging to get back to where we used to be. That, and getting everyone to rehearsals on time.

What are the future plans for The Peachskins?

We’re releasing a EP hopefully in July. That’s also the same time we’re graduating (hopefully). Aside from that, we just wanna keep playing more shows this year.
