Concerned About Food Wastage In Malaysia? Here’s A Campaign You Can Join

We’re pretty sure we all grew up with some sort of food wastage guilt. We were always told to finish our plate since “there are starving kids in Africa” — and if you didn’t then we’re just not sure what sort of super-chilled back parents you had.

In this age of Internet eco-consciousness (and also the fact that our world is very, very wasteful due to overproduction…), we realise that food is also a major victim in waste — we are blessed in our country to be surrounded by so much food but so much of it gets wasted.

The numbers are horrifying. Here is what we found:

“Malaysians throw away enough perfectly edible food to feed 2.2 million meals PER DAY! This wastage seems criminal when there is malnutrition in Malaysia and starvation in other parts of the world. Not only is it a waste of energy and dwindling resources to grow the food, the problem extends to the landfills where food waste decomposes anaerobically generating methane, a green house gas that exacerbates global warming which then upsets weather and rainfall patterns making it harder for farmers to grow more food. A vicious downward spiral for our food and water security, not to mention more land being cleared for food production.”

If you think this is unacceptable, there is a food wastage awareness campaign and you can contribute.

We found this via Sampah, Menyampah and Friends and also @mytaknak.

All you have to do is take a picture of food unfinished on a plate and upload it at this link.

The selected images will be collated and displayed in a food waste installation at Sampah,Menyampah and Friends’ EARTH Weekend at The School Jaya One, Petaling Jaya 4-5 April 2020 12pm- 6pm.

Information is in this Instagram post.
