Jom Makan: Here Are 14 Spots To Find Nostalgic Malaysian Food Around KL

Anneh! give me one kopi o bing, bungkus please.” That my friend, is true Malaysian style happening right there. Three languages (actually four) all ‘rojak’ together into one sentence. I mean, it’s a rare scenario in other parts of the world. Only a society that has harmoniously combined all heritage together is able to create such culture. While I’m not trying to boast, I’m glad to say that Malaysia can.

Look around you and you’ll find that we not only speak that way. In terms of food, there’s no discrimination too. It’s like we have this fondness of meshing everything together — take our baba nyonya culture as an example.

Well, come to think of it, we’ve come a long way to reaching where we are now. So, in true Merdeka spirit, let us not just celebrate the new but also embrace and reminisce the old. Come tag along as we bring you for a back in time breakfast trail around KL. Maybe that way, you’d get an idea of what the old Malaya would’ve been like, even though you might not have lived in that era.

Missing my egg tart and that person who queued with me ☺

Not a fan of half-baked cheese tarts but still prefer yourself a jiggly puff? Then, Bunn Choon’s traditional egg tarts will surely strike your fancy. You can taste the amazing flavours of the incredibly flaky pastry together and the creamy egg filling in just one bite. It’s so good that even people without a sweet tooth wouldn’t mind going for seconds and thirds. We credit Kok Tong, the owner, for using pork lard in his pastries. It’s a tradition that old Chinese bakeries stick to and we thank him being the fourth-generation owner of the business has to do with that.

Location: 153, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000, Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours: 9am-5pm (closed on Mondays)

**egg tarts are only available after 10am**
