With the digital age comes connectivity, instantaneity and the crazy-amazing ability to go viral and get a massive reach in just hours. Stephanie Poetri can attest to that — because she wrote a song which was inspired by Instagram Q&As, she made it in about two hours and it went viral overnight.

She was already quite well-known as the daughter of Indonesian diva Titi DJ, but ‘I Love You 3000’ and its music video, has been viewed over 50 million times on YouTube since its release in June 2019 and shot to #1 on the Spotify Viral 50 Chart in the same month. R

Stephanie Poetri is  featured 88rising’s ‘Head In The Clouds II’ album with the track ‘I Love You 3000 II’ alongside Jackson Wang.

We wanted to know a little bit more about what it took to create a phenomenon that reached all corners of the world, so we spoke exclusively to Stephanie to see what she’s currently working on, the totally-related way she vegs out and how goofy she really is.

Hi Stephanie! Can you tell us how you came up with your song “I Love You 3000”? What was the story or journey leading up to that?

I like to do Q&As on my Instagram story, and one day, I decided to ask people to send me a word or a phrase and I would write it into a short song and post it on the story. Endgame came out a week before that, so a bunch of people sent ‘I Love You 3000.’ I wrote the chorus of the song super quickly and the next day a lot of people said they wanted it to be a full song. I wrote it in two hours and went and got my friend to help produce it with me!

Did you ever expect it to become as big as it is right now?

Not at all! It was just a fun project that I did since a lot of my supporters said they wanted it to be a full song, that’s why everything was so DIY! I didn’t expect that the song would reach outside my audience.

What did you want people to take from your music?

My aim is to make songs that can be used as the soundtrack to people’s lives. I want my songs to accompany people throughout their day, like on their way to work or in the shower.

Do you have a favourite moment that has happened ever since your single blew up?

Probably meeting Jackson Wang, I’ve been a huge fan since high school so it was like meeting Beyonce for me.

Growing up, did you ever expect to get into the entertainment industry?

Not really, cause I grew up seeing how hard my mom worked and I felt like it was way too much pressure. But now, after realizing music is my passion, the pressure is actually very motivating!

Who would you say are your biggest musical inspirations or who are your idols?

Right now I listen to Alec Benjamin, Jeremy Zucker and Finneas. I think what I take from them is their ability to really showcase lyrics in their songs and use organic sounds to push the meanings behind them.

Is there a song that means a lot to you?

Rich Brian’s ‘History’. I saw Brian’s breakdown of the song and it inspired me a lot in terms of songwriting and how to really play with metaphors and emotions.

Can you tell us a little bit about your newest release “I Love You 3000 II” with Jackson Wang?

It’s a new take on the song, having Jackson show his perspective of the original storyline. I dedicated this song to my fans and it’s an honor to have him make his own interpretation!

What was the funniest thing that happened on set filming that music video?

Jackson is super into learning new languages and he kept asking me how to say certain things in Indonesian. He would then repeat it over and over again at super random times.

Do you have an ultimate dream collab?

Lauv is someone I really look up to and see as a ‘role model’ in the industry. It would be such a dream come true to not just have a song with him, but to create one together!

If you had the day off and didn’t have anything to do, what would you do?

Play Minecraft. I have a server with my friends, it gets LIT!

“I just want to be able to produce for myself and for others.”

Five years from now, where do you see yourself?

I just want to be able to produce for myself and for others. My main passion is actually songwriting, and I love seeing how other people interpret my song. That’s why I love watching covers so much! I also want to be closer with my fans, and do a bunch of shows all over the world and see everyone!

What can we expect in the near future?

New music! I can’t wait for you all to hear what I’ve been working on!

How would you describe your style?

Colorful comfort! I try to be as comfortable as possible with my style cause I move around a lot and I don’t want to limit my expression!

Tell us a bit about beauty — what are your favourite make-up picks?

I LOVE brown eyeliner! if you get the right color, it makes the perfect shade for everyday-wear. I like to have winged eyeliner and with a brown color it looks pretty natural!

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would it be?

Energetic, goofy and loving!
