In fact, prices are the highest it’s been in 19 years to the point that orchard thefts are on the rise in New Zealand. That’s right, thieves are now breaking into orchards to steal avocados instead of into houses to steal jewellery.
So what exactly is causing the sudden surge in prices for the fruit fondly nicknamed the “alligator pear”? We got two industry insiders to give us some insights!
They’re the current superfood
Avocados are the latest IT food for a reason – they’re effortlessly indulgent yet super nutritious. “Avocados are rich in Vitamin E that’s absolutely crucial to your health,” says Muhammad Afiq Bin Shamsu Anuar, Marketing Executive of MBG Fruits Sdn. Bhd. “They also have wonderful benefits and uses for skin, hair, health and beauty.” They’re also full of fat, but really good ones that is said to reduce bad cholesterol, inflammation and blood triglycerides. Researchers also found that extracts from avocados can help to prevent the growth of pre-cancerous cells that lead to oral and prostate cancer. Wow.
