So who is Sierra Capri? Simply put, she’s the future.

Starred as the beyond honest, devoted friend and fearless Monse Finnie in Netflix’s coming of age story “On My Block“, Sierra Capri has quickly become known for her natural instinct in front of the camera even though she hasn’t really been in the business for long. This natural talent makes her a rising star!

“On My Block” focuses on a group of bright teens comprised of three boys and a girl as they enter a high school in LA. Sierra chats with us about how she got her first major acting role as well as her challenges and inspirations growing up.

Below, see what else Sierra Capri had to say in this exclusive interview with #TeamCLEO.

How do you relate the show (On My Block) to your own life back in high school?

In a sense of just finding myself. When I was in high school, I had friends because I played sports such as cheerleading and gymnastics. I also was on the dance team, art club and technology club. Other than that, I kept to myself and was very shy. I can relate to the show because I didn’t know where I ‘fit in.’

What made you make a big change from a biology major to acting and why?

It was something I always wanted to do but I didn’t know that an opportunity would come this soon. When I told my mom and the rest of my family that this is what I want to do, they all thought it was a sign from God. They also suggested that I can always go back to school, which I agreed to do.

What made you wanted to pursue a career in acting?

I love the craft and getting lost in my work. I also love being able to express myself on a project and in scenes in a way that I can’t necessarily do or feel comfortable doing in real life.

Describe your style back in high school. What would you wear?

I was the Nike catalogue! I wore Nike from head to toe with matching shorts and shoes with the little Nike print on the shirt.

Can you tell us a bit about how the opportunity to star in On My Block came about?

I saw the audition online on Actors Access and submitted myself. About two weeks later, I got an email from one of the producers that said someone wanted to Facetime me and I was thinking it would be one of the producers – but turns out it was Lauren Iungerich who is the creator of “On My Block” and she asked if I wanted to fly out there to do a camera read.

Could you share with us the process of how you got into the character of Monse?

I use my own personal experiences and things that I’ve been through and the relationships that I’ve cultivated over the years. Especially with my brothers. I have three older brothers and the fact that I have three male best friends in the show, I was able to use that to help.

How did you prepare for the role?

At the time when I was growing up, I was also immersed in that environment and had a lot of similar experiences that each of the kids have on On My Block. I think about those experiences to prepare for the role.

What has the experience been like being a part of the show?

It’s been amazing! I don’t think I could have asked for a better experience on a first project. I was blessed to work with so many amazing people such as the cast and crew – we are all a family.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

People may not know, but I am very girly.

What’s the most memorable thing that has happened on set?

The most memorable thing that has happened on Season 1 was when Monse jumped on Cesar because that was my first real stunt that I ever did, and it was super fun.

Is there a particular actor/actress that you’d love to work with?

Oh my goodness, I would love to work with Gugulethu Mbatha-Raw, I like her a lot!

I always say, “what’s meant to be, will be.”

– Sierra’s quote to live by.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

The biggest challenge for me is just staying true to myself.

Do you get nervous before the camera starts rolling? If yes, what do you do to calm down?

Absolutely! All the time! To calm myself down, I just breathe and tell myself that everything is going to work itself out.

Do you think the industry has become more diverse? What do you feel still needs to change?

I feel like slowly but surely the industry is becoming more diverse although we have a long way to go. The more support and encouragement that we all have as a community to create more diverse shows, the closer I think it will happen over time.
